Belkin Tunebase Direct with Hands-Free for iPhone and iPod Review

This product is very similar to other “TuneBase” products, now with the addition of Handsfree phone operation as well. After trying several solutions in my car, this one by far worked the best for me. Belkin has made a quality product that works fairly well.

Some thoughts on the product:

1) The base is a hunk of plastic that fits into your cigarette lighter adapter in your car. Coming off of that is a very stiff gooseneck that ends in the mount for the phone/ipod. I have a manual transmission car, with the adapter close by. I was able to find an orientation that does not interfere with the operation of the car. This display on the base (for the FM signal), rotates 360 degrees, so the device can be oriented in any direction for your your car and you will still be able to see the display.

2) With my phone, I use the Speck rubber case. The mounting bracket fits fine over the case. I do NOT have to take my iPhone out of the case to use with this device. Very cool.

3) Handsfree seems to work reasonably well. There is a “multi-button” on the device that controls answering and making calls. The audio for the call comes over the cars speaker system. I heard no echo or sound issues with the call.

4) In most of the reviews I see about these FM transmitters, people are complaining about the audio quality. Look, the FCC governs the output power these devices are allowed to send, and it is pretty low. I was able to find a few channels that work reasonably well. I have used FM transmitters in my car for 5+ years now. You just aren’t going to find perfect sound quality. I think this is more a factor of a) Your car, b) where you are and c) the power output restrictions for transmitting in the licensed FM band. This device is as good as any other device in this department.

5) The “Clearscan” feature might be nice while traveling, but you won’t really want to use it for your “Everyday” channel. You will need to experiment here a bit to find a channel or two that works reasonably well for you. I live in a major metropolitan area and was able to find 2 or 3. This device allows you to tune to almost any frequency in the FM band, so you should find something.

6) You do have to make 2 connections for this device. The iPod dock connection on the bottom and the minijack up top. This is not ideal, but hasn’t bothered my as much as I thought it would.

Overall, I would recommend this product to others who are looking for an FM transmitter style solution in their car.

Nice bluetooth headset.

Pros–(1) Love the retractable earpiece. Love the colors available (I chose the red one to match my phone, and the color makes it easier to locate) (2) Like that it blinks when on. (3) Small, portable, not real obvious, don’t have to have the transmitter by my brain. (4) Charges in 2-3 hours (5) Seems to transmit voice well.

Cons–(1)Headset itself does not make audible noise with incoming call, just blinks. Would be great if it had an audible tone to help locate it, or just to notify of incoming call. (2) Buttons are a bit of a challenge for me. I have a hard time turning the unit on/off. Mostly turning it on. (3) Retractor button is opposite the clip, so when clipping it on I often retract the earpiece. (4) Clip itself is very strong, which is good in that it doesn’t fall off, but bad in that I have a hard time opening it in order to clip it on and off. (5) I’ve noticed that when unit depletes it’s charge while not in use, it just turns off. It does tone and blink red when in use with low charge.

Other–Volume seems to reset itself with each call, to LOUD. I suppose that’s better than not being able to hear. There is a volume control on the headset, which works, but is slow to respond. It’s just a bit heavy–when clipped onto lighter weight clothing, like cottons, it pulls my clothes.

I would like another connect/disconnect button on the earpiece itself, as well as an audible tone from the headset with incoming calls. And maybe just a little bit lighter weight.

I received my Motorola S305 headset a week ago, and use it now over my Plantronics Discovery 975. The headset is terrifically comfortable and the call quality is excellent while on the phone (both in and outward calls). Music playback on my Tour is acceptable. I wish I could adjust the music equalizer, because I dont hear the deep bass that other reviewers hear. Having said that, the music quality is decent enough so I thoroughly enjoy it. The pressure on the ears is not bad at all, and the speaker cans allow outside sound so you can hear things around you. The controls are easy to use and easy to find – you just need a short period of time to get used to where the buttons are.

I purchased this product to use with my cell phone, which is also a music player, and to listen to music over the internet at work. I also purchased the Motorola bluetooth PC adapter (PC850) which lets me use them with VOIP software on my work laptop for conference calls. The product has worked flawlessly in all situations and the sound quality is excellent. I would highly recommend this product to anyone. The only negative is the wrap-around head band is not adjustable and may not fit comfortably for some people.
