I use my SmartTalk headphone adaptor daily to connect my iPhone 3GS to my (alas now discontinued) “The Speaker Company” NS3 noise-cancellling headphones.
Headphones have a 3mm socket input, and I got a very short male-male connector cord, so I have a very simple system: – iPhone -> SmartTalk (~ 2 foot long cable) clipped on shirt -> headphones. No excess cable lying around! Control button on SmartTalk allows pause/un-pause of music without fumbling in pocket, or canceling of alarms or answering the phone (once you get used to the ~ 0.3 second lag in responding to the button). Basically lets you have the convenience of the control button that’s on the headphones supplied with the iPhone, but lets you use real headphones. No volume control on the SmartTalk, but there’s one on the headphones. Skipping tracks via repeated pushes works fine: two quick pushes to skip forward, 3 to skip back (a bit harder).
The “hold button to invoke voice dialing” feature is also great: can pause iTunes & make a call, all without taking phone out of pocket. Only used occasionally with the phone, but seems to work OK.
